# Bounce rate

**Bounce rate** is the percentage of visits to a website where the visitor leaves without meaningfully engaging. In Google Analytics 4, a bounce is any session that is not an "engaged session", so bounce rate is simply the opposite of **engagement rate**.

## Bounce rate in plain English

Someone clicks through to your site, glances at the page and leaves. That is a bounce. A high bounce rate can mean the page did not match what the visitor expected, was too slow, or did not make the next step clear. It can also mean the visitor found exactly what they needed, such as your phone number, and left happy. Context matters.

## How GA4 measures bounce rate

Older versions of Google Analytics counted a bounce as a single-page visit. GA4 changed the definition. A session counts as **engaged** if the visitor:

- stays for longer than 10 seconds, or
- completes a key event (a conversion, such as a form submission), or
- views two or more pages.

**Engagement rate** = engaged sessions ÷ total sessions. **Bounce rate** = 100% minus engagement rate. So a 60% engagement rate means a 40% bounce rate.

## What is a good bounce rate?

There is no universal target. Bounce rates vary by page type and traffic source. A blog post that answers a quick question may have a high bounce rate and still be doing its job. A service page or [landing page](https://webmanics.com/glossary/landing-page) with a high bounce rate is more worrying, because those pages exist to move visitors towards an enquiry. Compare similar pages and track the trend over time rather than chasing a benchmark.

## Common causes of a high bounce rate

- **Mismatch with the search or ad**: the page does not deliver what the link promised.
- **Slow loading**, especially on mobile.
- **An unclear [value proposition](https://webmanics.com/glossary/value-proposition)**: visitors cannot tell quickly if you can help.
- **Intrusive pop-ups** or cookie banners that cover the content.
- **No obvious next step**: a weak or hidden [call to action](https://webmanics.com/glossary/call-to-action).

## How to reduce bounce rate

1. **Match the message** of your headline to the search terms and ads that bring people in.
2. **Speed up mobile pages** by compressing images and cutting heavy scripts.
3. **Put the essentials first**: what you do, who it is for, proof and the next step near the top.
4. **Link to the next logical page**, such as prices, case studies or booking.
5. **Watch session recordings and [heatmaps](https://webmanics.com/glossary/heatmap)** to see what visitors do before they leave.

## Do not optimise bounce rate on its own

Bounce rate is a clue, not a goal. A lower bounce rate is only useful if it leads to more enquiries. Always judge changes by your [conversion rate](https://webmanics.com/glossary/conversion-rate) and the number of genuine leads.
