# Fitts's law

**Fitts's law** states that the time it takes to move to and select a target, such as a button or link, depends on how far away it is and how big it is. Large, nearby targets are quick and easy to hit. Small, distant ones are slow and easy to miss.

## Fitts's law in plain English

The principle comes from research by psychologist Paul Fitts in 1954. On a website, it explains why tiny links frustrate people, why a phone number buried in the footer gets fewer taps, and why a big, well-placed button gets used. It applies to a mouse pointer on desktop and, even more, to thumbs on a phone.

## Why it matters for conversion

Your most important actions, such as "Book now", "Call us" or "Send enquiry", should be the easiest things on the page to hit. If the main [call to action](https://webmanics.com/glossary/call-to-action) is small, crowded by other links or placed where thumbs struggle to reach, some visitors will mis-tap, give up or never notice it. Fixing that is one of the simplest ways to lift mobile [conversion rate](https://webmanics.com/glossary/conversion-rate).

## How to apply Fitts's law

1. **Make primary buttons big enough.** Accessibility guidance (WCAG 2.2) sets a minimum target size of 24 by 24 CSS pixels, and many design systems recommend around 44 to 48 pixels for touch targets.
2. **Give buttons space.** Keep important targets apart from other links, so people do not tap the wrong thing.
3. **Put key actions close to where people decide**, such as next to pricing, reviews or the end of a service description.
4. **Think about thumbs.** On mobile, sticky bars or buttons in the lower half of the screen are easier to reach than links in the top corner.
5. **Make whole cards clickable** rather than just a small "Read more" link.
6. **Use full-width form fields and buttons on mobile**, with labels that are easy to tap.

## Fitts's law and Hick's law together

[Hick's law](https://webmanics.com/glossary/hicks-law) says fewer choices make decisions faster. Fitts's law says bigger, closer targets make actions faster. Used together, they point to the same design: one clear, large, well-placed primary action, with secondary options kept smaller and quieter.

## Common mistakes

- Text links as the only way to enquire.
- Small phone icons with no visible number to tap.
- Buttons that sit right next to each other on mobile.
- Cookie banners or chat widgets covering the main button.
