# User testing

**User testing** (also called usability testing) is the practice of watching real people try to complete tasks on your website, such as finding a price or booking an appointment, so you can see where they get confused, hesitate or give up. It shows you problems that analytics alone cannot explain.

## User testing in plain English

You know your business and your website too well to see it as a newcomer does. User testing fixes that. You give a few people who match your customers a realistic task, such as "find out how much a consultation costs and book one", and ask them to think out loud while they do it. Within minutes you hear things like "I'm not sure if this is for me" or "where's the price?"

Testing can be **moderated** (you watch live, in person or on a video call, and ask follow-up questions) or **unmoderated** (people record themselves using a testing platform in their own time).

## How user testing fits into CRO

In [conversion rate optimisation](https://webmanics.com/glossary/conversion-rate-optimisation), user testing sits alongside your analytics and [heatmaps](https://webmanics.com/glossary/heatmap). Analytics shows *where* people drop out of your [conversion funnel](https://webmanics.com/glossary/conversion-funnel). Heatmaps show *what* they do on the page. User testing tells you *why*, in their own words. It is especially useful for smaller websites that do not have enough traffic for [A/B testing](https://webmanics.com/glossary/ab-testing).

## How many people do you need?

Fewer than most people expect. Nielsen Norman Group's long-standing guidance is that around five testers per round will uncover most of the major usability problems on a page or journey. It is usually better to run several small rounds, fixing issues in between, than one large test.

## How to run a simple user test

1. **Pick one journey** that matters, such as booking, requesting a quote or comparing services.
2. **Recruit people who match your customers.** Friends and colleagues already know too much about you.
3. **Write realistic tasks**, not leading instructions. "Find out whether they can help with a sports injury" beats "Click the Services menu".
4. **Ask them to think out loud** and resist the urge to help.
5. **Note every hesitation**, wrong click and question, then group the problems by how often they occur.
6. **Fix the biggest issues first** and test again.

## Common mistakes

- Asking people what they *like* instead of watching what they *do*.
- Testing only on desktop when most of your visitors arrive on a phone.
- Explaining the website before the test starts, which hides the confusion you are looking for.
- Collecting findings but never changing anything.
