Landing pages in plain English
In everyday use, people call any page a visitor arrives on first a "landing page", and Google Analytics uses the term that way too. In marketing and CRO, it usually means a dedicated, focused page with a single call to action and few distractions.
For a service business, good examples include a page for one treatment, one service in one location, or a seasonal offer you are promoting with ads.
Why landing pages matter for conversion
When someone clicks an ad for "emergency boiler repair", they expect to land on a page about emergency boiler repair, not a homepage listing every service. The closer the page matches what the visitor was looking for, the more likely they are to act. That match between the promise and the page is often called message match.
Focused landing pages usually convert better than general pages because they:
- answer one visitor's question quickly
- remove links and options that pull attention away
- put proof, pricing cues and the next step close together
- make results easier to measure, because the page has one job
What a high-converting landing page includes
- A headline that matches the ad or search and states a clear value proposition.
- A short explanation of what is included, who it is for and what happens next.
- Social proof: reviews, ratings, credentials or recognisable clients.
- One primary call to action, repeated down the page on longer pages.
- A short form that only asks for what you need to reply.
- Answers to common objections, such as price, timing and location, often as FAQs.
- Fast mobile loading. Most paid social and many search visits happen on phones.
Common landing page mistakes
- Sending all ads to the homepage.
- Several competing buttons ("Call us", "Download", "Follow us", "Read our blog").
- Generic stock imagery instead of real people, premises or results.
- No tracking, so you cannot tell which campaign produced the enquiry.
