CTAs in plain English
Every page on your website should have a clear next step. Without one, visitors read, nod and leave. A CTA is that next step, made obvious. Good CTAs feel like the natural thing to do after reading the page. Weak ones are vague ("Learn more", "Submit"), hidden at the bottom, or competing with five other buttons.
Why CTAs matter for conversion
The CTA is where your conversion funnel either moves forward or stops. Small changes to what the CTA offers, where it sits and what it says can noticeably change your conversion rate, because they affect the exact moment of decision.
What makes a strong call to action
- It offers something, not just a verb. "Get your free website audit" beats "Submit". The offer is what makes the click worth it.
- It is specific about what happens next. "Book a 20-minute call" sets expectations. "Get started" leaves visitors guessing.
- It matches the visitor's readiness. Someone comparing options may prefer "See our prices" to "Book now".
- It is easy to see and tap. High contrast, large enough on a phone and not hidden behind sticky banners.
- It has reassurance nearby. A short line such as "No obligation" or "We reply within one working day" reduces risk, as does social proof next to the button.
Primary and secondary CTAs
Most pages need one primary CTA, the action you most want, and at most one secondary CTA for visitors who are not ready yet. For example: "Book a consultation" as the main button, with "See our prices" as a quieter link. More options than that usually means fewer decisions.
Where to place CTAs
- near the top of the page, so visitors who are ready can act straight away
- after key proof, such as reviews or a case study
- at the end of the page, where readers who have scrolled are most interested
- in a sticky header or bar on mobile, if it does not cover content
A heatmap will show whether visitors actually see and click your CTA.
Examples
- Weak: "Submit" Stronger: "Send my enquiry"
- Weak: "Learn more" Stronger: "See treatment prices"
- Weak: "Contact us" Stronger: "Book a free 15-minute call"
